Michael Balint Clinic
Specialized Clinic for Psychosomatics and Holistic Medicine
The Michael Balint Clinic has offered a treatment program for patients with emotionally unstable personality of the borderline type since early 1997, which is substantially based on the concept developed by Marsha Linehan.
Treatment Concept
Section titled “Treatment Concept”The central idea of the treatment approach is that within the framework of inpatient treatment with a (relatively) short duration of approximately 3 months, the primary focus must be on improving how one relates to oneself and to others.
This means that during the inpatient stay, the therapeutic relationship is not the central theme; rather, the goal is improved management of the tension states triggered by the disorder.
Typical Problem Areas
Section titled “Typical Problem Areas”To interrupt these tension states, those affected often know no other way to help themselves than to injure or harm themselves. This includes:
- Self-injury
- Alcohol and drug use
- Risky lifestyle
- Suicidal thoughts
Further associated with this disorder are:
- Constant questioning of who one actually is
- Feelings of emptiness
- Difficulty in forming relationships
- Severe mood swings
Treatment Program
Section titled “Treatment Program”The treatment program includes, in addition to individual sessions, various group therapies:
Basic Group
Section titled “Basic Group”Provides information about the form of the disorder in general and in individual cases.
Skills Training
Section titled “Skills Training”Coping strategies for tension states as well as new ways of relating to oneself and to others are developed and practiced.
Peer Group
Section titled “Peer Group”In this group, patients come together without therapists for specific tasks.
Art Therapy
Section titled “Art Therapy”Creative forms of expression for one’s inner state are explored.
Shiatsu Group
Section titled “Shiatsu Group”Physical self-expression and self-awareness are practiced.
Admission
Section titled “Admission”If interested in treatment, prior contact by the treating physician and/or therapist at the patient’s home location with the clinic is necessary.
A preliminary interview at the clinic is mandatory and is intended to provide both diagnostic clarity and a mutual getting-to-know-each-other before admission.
