MEDIAN Clinic for Psychosomatics Bad Duerkheim

The Psychosomatic Clinic Bad Duerkheim was designed as a facility for inpatient psychotherapy and psychosomatic rehabilitation and opened in April 1981. The clinic is situated on the edge of the spa park of Bad Duerkheim and is thus closely connected to town life.

During its planning, not only site-related considerations were taken into account; the architectural design of the building also served the goal of creating the most favorable conditions possible for activating and communication-promoting therapeutic processes.

The clinic’s treatment concept is based on the scientifically grounded, empirically validated methods of behavioral therapy and behavioral medicine, as they are used with broad indications in psychosomatics, clinical psychology, psychiatry, and general medicine.

Following appropriate medical diagnostics, the assigned therapist conducts a behaviorally-oriented exploration of the symptoms, their antecedent conditions, and their consequences with the patient.

On this basis, a plausible overarching disorder model is jointly developed, from which change goals and therapy strategies can be derived, enabling the patient to gradually achieve alternative self-responsible action in the interest of:

  • Symptom reduction
  • Improvement of functional capacity
  • Development of health-conscious behavior

The goal of every treatment is the successful medical, psychosocial, and occupational rehabilitation of our patients.

Within the breadth of responsibilities belonging to the holistic therapeutic understanding of behavioral medicine, the following main indications have developed:

Neuroses, stress and adjustment disorders, somatoform disorders such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • Dissociative syndromes
  • Functional disorders of all organ systems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Headaches and other chronic pain syndromes
  • Sexual functional and behavioral disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Enduring post-traumatic personality changes
  • Impulse control disorders
  • ADHD
  • Interval treatments for psychoses
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating with obesity
  • Other classic psychosomatic conditions (inflammatory bowel diseases, chronic ulcer disease, bronchial asthma, arterial hypertension)

Psychological Disorders with Severe Illnesses

Section titled “Psychological Disorders with Severe Illnesses”

Psychological disorders associated with or resulting from severe or chronic conditions such as:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cancer
  • Chronic rheumatoid arthritis
  • After accidents with permanent physical disability

Treatment cannot be offered under the following circumstances:

  • Significant intellectual disability or pronounced organic brain impairment — patients who cannot actively participate in a therapeutic change process
  • Acutely psychotic patients — for whom the open, relationship-active, and self-responsibility-oriented setting of the clinic offers too little structure and support
  • Manifest substance dependence
  • Acutely suicidal patients
  • Adolescents under 16 years (since 1996, the treatment concept has been extended for 16-18-year-olds)
  • Insufficient German language skills (exceptions for English, French, Italian after a preliminary interview)
  • Patients who are unable to manage routine daily activities (e.g., dressing, personal hygiene)

Treatment Concept for Borderline Personality Disorders

Section titled “Treatment Concept for Borderline Personality Disorders”

Within this framework, an integrative inpatient treatment concept was developed and scientifically evaluated that specifically addresses the challenges of patients with personality disorders through resource orientation and psychoeducation.

The treatment concept is oriented toward:

  • The newer developments in cognitive behavioral therapy
  • The schema-therapeutic approaches of A. Beck and J. E. Young
  • The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for borderline personality disorder by M. M. Linehan

Treatment measures are developed within the framework of a multimodal and adaptive overall therapeutic strategy, oriented toward individual problems and extending beyond a narrow understanding of therapy to equally include contributions from all disciplines:

  • Individual therapeutic measures
  • Co-therapeutic support
  • Jacobson progressive relaxation training
  • Differentiated offering of disorder- and problem-specific group therapies
  • Lectures
  • Partner and family sessions
  • Social, sports, and occupational therapy offerings
  • Medical and physiotherapeutic interventions

Depending on the problem and phase of treatment, these have varying but fundamentally equal weight.
